Industrial Design

DW is first and foremost an industrial design studio. We believe that industrial design is the front end of product development. The success of a product depends not just on how well it functions, but that it properly addresses the many requirements of its environment and use, and has a strong appeal.

Our extensive design experience allows us to understand, envision and combine all your needs to produce a successful product that considers the user experience, functionality, aesthetics, user interfaces, mechanical design, manufacturing and marketing requirements.

Mechanical design strongly compliments the industrial design process. We design with mechanical and production issues in mind, and we’re always looking for ways to improve, optimize and cost reduce. We have a very strong plastic design expertise, and have many tools such as FEA and mold-filling simulation analysis software to ensure parts are properly designed. We also have strategic partnerships with certified engineering groups where needed.

It is one thing to be an expert in CAD software, but another to know when to use it. We balance our hands-on approach to design with validation through digital models in order to reach the best possible solution to any design problem we face. On-screen models allow for quick changes and modifications, and partnered with our prototyping capabilities can be rapidly transformed into something physical to hold and analyze. We ensure our final 3D geometry captures all your project requirements and is ready for manufacturing.

There are numerous external services available for rapid injection molding, CNC laser cutting, sheet metal bending and high-speed machining, that we’re experienced in navigating through for the right process for each job.

  • Qualifying manufacturers’ production and their engineering capabilities.
  • Early manufacturer engagement and feedback in the industrial design phase.
  • Designing to reduce shipping costs.
  • Creating early BOMs in order to meet program costs target.
  • Working with our clients and suppliers’ in-house engineering groups.
  • Ensuring the correct mold design features for successful plastic parts.
  • CAD platform compatibility and geometry validation and confirmation.
  • Tooling program build monitoring and progress reports review.
  • First article inspection and approval through to production parts support.

Communication

Ensuring clear and regular communication with you is essential to delivering a successful product. Whether you’re near or remote, we have the tools to make it work, and can do so in English or French.

Facilities

We use top-of-the-line software, workstations and equipment. All our data is secure and backed up. We have a large workshop and prototyping lab in our 5000 sq. ft. building so we can test and build whatever we need to for product development.

Intellectual Property

We are aware of the potential value and limitations of IP, having assisted many clients with acquiring and circumnavigating patents. We are adept and experienced in innovating for a high probability of having IP granted. Current DW employees are named on numerous patents with additional patents pending.

Collaboration

We can work with your in-house design team as additional collaborators, or work independently at your needs and requests. We can bring in experts from many specialized fields to contribute as needed to ensure the best possible product.
