If municipalities offered an organics collection container for the kitchen, the participation rate of city-wide composting programs could be improved. Cooking and disposal habits were studied for the development of this container, which resulted in many features to help ease the process – such as only needing one free hand to open and close the unit. Scraping food scraps into the container was made simple by the wide opening and a lid that stays open, and the lid can be easily removed for cleaning in the dishwasher or sink.
